Horton Plains

Cloud Forest and World’s End

Best: Jan – AprHalf dayHill Country

Overview

Horton Plains is a national park on Sri Lanka’s highest plateau, part of the Central Highlands World Heritage Site. A walking loop of around nine kilometres crosses open grassland and stunted cloud forest to World’s End, where the land falls away in a near-vertical cliff with views, on a clear day, all the way to the south coast. We set off before dawn, because the mist usually rolls in by mid-morning. Along the way you pass Baker’s Falls and may spot sambar deer, endemic birds and, with luck, the rare purple-faced langur.
